A Baby Humpback at the Heads
When the Ocean Surprises You
(Even though we don't run whale-watching tours... sometimes the whales find us.)
There’s nothing quite like the ocean reminding you who’s boss.
Yesterday, right out at the Heads, a baby humpback surfaced beside Timaru — calm water, rolling swell, pure ocean wonder. Moments like that stop everyone on deck.
No rods in hand, no chatter — just quiet awe.
We don't run whale-watching trips — our thing is fishing, but every now and then, when we're crossing into Bass Strait, the sea has other plans.
A tail flick, a blow, and a gentle reminder that this is their world first.
If you’re ever lucky enough to spot one, remember:
✸ Keep at least 100 m distance (and 300 m for jetskis)
✸ Never chase or cross their path
✸ Slow down and let them move freely
They’re on their long migration down the coast, and we’re just guests in their path.
Until next time, we’ll keep fishing — and keep our eyes on the horizon.
