Captain’s Log
Spring’s here and the bay is firing up. Water temps are on the rise, baitfish are pushing through, and the snapper have started showing up in decent numbers. If you’ve been waiting to wet a line around the Mornington Peninsula, now’s the time.

What’s biting right now:
✸ Snapper: Good schools in 14—18m off Sorrento and Rye.
✸ Flathead: Plenty on the drift in 20—25m.
✸ Squid/Calamari: Thick around Portsea weed beds, perfect for bait or a feed.
Tips for the month:
✸ Best bite time has been early morning tide changes.
✸ Fresh bait is key — squid strips and silver whiting doing the trick.
✸ Don’t be afraid to move — if you don’t get a bite within 10 mins, try another patch.
Captain’s note:
“On board Timaru we’ve already seen some solid fish come over the rails this week. Nothing beats watching that rod load up while the sun’s coming over the heads.“
